Physical Education

Physical Education is a planned program of instruction that helps students develop the knowledge, attitude, motor skills, self management skills and confidence needed to maintain physically active lifestyles.

Students in physical education class will develop competency or proficiency in a wide variety of physical skills. Units of instruction include playground games and modified versions of basketball, baseball, football, volleyball, soccer and floor hockey. Other activities stress heath related fitness components such as balance, agility,  muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. Such activities include calisthenics and locomoter skills, rope jumping, yoga poses, stunts and tumbling, frisbee games, and ball handling skills.

All students are required to participate in physical education unless excused with a parent or doctor note. Therefore, P.E. shoes and clothes that permit full range of movement are required. Students in grades 1st through 3rd have physical education with a Physical Education teacher once per week for 35 minutes. Students in grades 4th and 5th have a scheduled physical education class once per week for 70 minutes.

Students in grades 4th and 5th will take the presidents fitness test and have an opportunity to earn the Active Lifestyle Award, or the National or Presidential Physical Fitness Award patches.  Students will have an opportunity to perform in a Physical Education Circus demonstrating their specialized circus arts skills, or participate in Tennis or Fitness Club.  (See spring academies)  In addition, students in all classes have an opportunity to earn a character award for modeling qualities of good sportsmanship.
